Sun loving perennials are my favorite! Who doesn't like a color palette of bright yellows, reds, purples and hot pinks. Paint sunny spots in your garden with these carefree, colorful, beauties that will come back year after year and are easy to grow. Here are 7 of my favorites:
Gaillardia also know as the Blanket Flower has red-and-yellow flowers that add a pop of color that makes you smile. It produces single or double daisy-like flowers all summer and into the fall. Gaillardia attracts butterflies. They grow anywhere from 1 to 3 feet tall. My favorite variety is Arizona Sun. It is one of the best sun loving perennials!
Delosperma "Cooperi" also known as Coopers Hardy Ice Plant has large magenta-pink flowers all summer long. Delosperma is a a succulent groundcover that is easy to grow and care for. This plant will not disappoint!
Coreopsis "Moonbeam" blooms a beautiful lemon yellow, tiny flowers all summer long. It's a great plant to border your garden. It grows to about 12-18" tall. A great companion shrub for coreopsis is Barberry "crimson pygmy". The burgundy and the yellow together is stunning.
Rudbeckia also known as Black Eyed Susan. They are perky and gold with a velvety black center, heat tolerant and need very little care. Combine Black Eyed Susans with Coneflowers and Shasta Daisies along a fence line or in the back drop of lower growing plants and you have stunning perennial garden!
Leucanthemum also known as the Shasta Daisy. A classic flower with white petals around a sunny yellow disc. Shasta Daisy can be 1 to 3 feet tall depending on the variety. They love the full sun and soil that drains well.
Salvia sylvestris ‘also know as May Night Sage. It has deep purple-blue flowers that bloom in late spring and blooms again in the summer. It is tolerant of cold weather and doesn't mind the heavy clay soils of Virginia. Looks great with Moonbeam Coreopsis.
Echinacea also known as the "Coneflower". It is purple to pink in color, depending on variety you choose. They can grow in dry condition up to 3-5 feet tall which provides a tall background for other perennials. Planting purple coneflower in the garden draws bees and butterflies, ensuring that nearby plants have plenty of pollinators.
